Bike Water Filter
Seldom do we at the Rural Independent have a product leap out of the computer monitor and grab us by the throat, but this one surely did.
The Aquaduct is a tricycle with a built in water filtration system. At the back end there is a large water container for unfiltered water. When you start riding the bike you pump the water from that container through a peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank. The pedaling draws water from a large tank, through a filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.
The Aquaduct was the winning entry in the Innovate or Die contest put on by Google and Specialized. The contest challenge was to build a pedal powered machine that has environmental impact.

Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that.. so it’s not totally clear to me what is sustainable about it, other than the water is filtered by pedal power. Maybe readers of this post would be interested in learning Water saving tips
