While Bella Coola is a wonderful place to live, sometimes the beauty is distorted by the ugly reality of dealing with large predators. In our so called 'civilized' world of today, most of us never have to contemplate large predators in our lives, let alone contend with them. Here in the Bella Coola Valley they are a way of life and something we face when we try to raise our own food.

Here is one story about dealing with grizzly bears that took place this past winter: (warning, there are some graphic photos of dead chickens).

Interesting post.

It's extremely rare to see a grizzly at my elevation (about 1500 ft, 490 metres) in my region of the Southern Selkirk mountains.  I've seen grizzlies, but that was while sojourning in the Rocky Mountains to the east of me.

Here, in my neighborhood, we do see coyotes, black bears, racoons, eagles, and one or two other predators of some size.

our place is a quarter mile from the Canadian boarder. I can look out my window and see midway Canada just a little west and north of me. We have plenty of black bear and I think the same thing happened to my neihbor but with a black bear or a bob cat , wiped out 29 chickens when he was gone during the weekend. No snow to tell for sure
